Vincent Van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh whose brief life was a relentless journey transforming personal suffering and isolation into a vibrant language of color and light.

History/Awards

Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) was a Dutch painter who created over 2,000 artworks, including 900 paintings, in just one decade before dying by suicide at age 37. Although largely unsuccessful and mentally ill during his life, his work was characterized by bold colors and emotional, dramatic brushwork which later made him one of the most famous artists in history.

Form/Style

Vincent van Gogh’s artistic form and style was defined by an  emotional approach that prioritized his "inner vision" over literal realism.  Central to his form is the impasto technique, where he applied oil paint so thickly that it created a physical, sculptural texture on the canvas. His work is famously categorized within the Post-Impressionist movement, though he is widely considered the pioneer of Expressionism

My Appreciation

I appreciate Vincent van Gogh’s because he used  his personal struggles, ranging from  mental illness and poverty to social isolation and turned it  into a revolutionary artistic language. His failing mental health,  a combination of bipolar disorder, epilepsy, and depression, did not hinder him; it fueled the emotional intensity of his work. Which makes me appreciate him because throughout all of his struggles he still used his talents to create something that people would remember for centuries to come.

"If you hear a voice within you say 'you cannot paint,' then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced."
